[Review] 30MF Liber Viking Class up armor

30MF Class up armor
Liber Viking kit review

Kit info

Story

This is a CLASS Ⅲ job requiring combat abilities surpassing those of Fighters, specializing in rough combat styles. Those with this job are capable of unleashing ferocious attacks using their powerful axe while having solid defensive abilities thanks to their round shield, demanding refined abilities and skills. It is a job that also needs exceptional mental strength and the tenacity to never give up amidst difficult situations, resulting in brave warriors who always fight on the front lines.

What's in the box (sprues and other parts)
Start
OJ4-A1 [Teal]

OJ4-A2 [Teal]

OJ4-B1 [Dark blue grey]

All sprues are labeled 30MF Viking (ヴァイキング) and judging from the precedent examples of Knight variant classes it's very likely that the sprues will be shared with upcoming Rosan Viking class up armor kit. Included parts are not in pairs because Viking class armor has asymmetrical design.

Instruction Manual [single sheet, colored on one side]
Instruction manual is a single sheet of paper that also takes the role of package art.

Detailed Parts Review

Every parts in the kit laid out.

New faceplates replaces the Fighter class faceplates. New back plate of the helm also replaces the Fighter class's comb.

New Vambrace replaces the Fighter class one, and bracers from the Fighter class are removed.

The right shoulder will be adorned with a new spaulder, while the left shoulder will receive a fur covering. Alternatively, you can choose to switch the sides, placing the fur coat on the right shoulder instead.

New skirt armor replaces one of the skirts from the Figher class. Manual gives example of placing the new larger skirt on the left side of the body.

New poleyns replaces the ones from the Fighter class.

The new skirt features a slightly different mounting point to appear correct, therefore, an additional joint piece is provided to adjust the skirt's position to the appropriate location.

New chest piece sit on top of the Fighter chest armor. There are also additional armor on the front and back of the waist section.

The shield and the axe are enhanced by affixing additional components to them.

As mentioned in the sprues analysis, asymmetrical armor pieces can be swapped sides. In this example I changed the sides so that the fur covering is on the right shoulder, and the larger skirt is on the left side.

Conclusion

This kit is another fun addition to growing 30MF series of kits. Unique point of the kit is that the armor is asymmetrical, so you can swap out sides to your liking. Or if you feel adventurous, you can get two sets of this class up armor kit and make some bizarre combinations like a model with two fur coverings on each sides and another with a pair of metal spaulders.

As with the Warrior class up armor, I think Bandai's color choice is somewhat questionable. It is better than brown of the warrior but teal color is still somewhat cartoony. I understand the limitation of cheaply manufactured injection kit but more subtle color would've been better in my opinion. Well, it does distinguish itself from other models because of that color choice, I'll give them that.

Color choices aside, another great kit. Highly recommended if you have the Fighter kit.
